A Journey of Innovation Abroad
Our DLAB India Experience in Mumbai
In November 2024, five DLAB students went to the vibrant city of Mumbai to explore innovation in developing markets. Through this cultural exchange and thought-provoking discussions, they were challenged to craft a business idea addressing an unmet need.
The Global Context
One of the trip’s highlights was a visit to the German Consulate General in Mumbai. There, DLAB students learned about the complexities of entering new markets, including the unique needs of a different consumer base. The consulate’s insights emphasized the importance of thorough research and adaptability when navigating such challenges.
This lesson was vividly illustrated during a visit to the start-up Atomberg, where co-founder Shibam Das shared his inspiring journey. Atomberg transformed the humble ceiling fan into a multimillion-dollar business by focusing on the specific needs of Indian consumers. He underscored the critical role of India’s start-up ecosystem, which provided the funding and support necessary to bring their vision to life.
From Learning to Action
Building on these insights, DLAB students were equipped with a solid framework for their business challenge. Guided by experienced coaches, each student identified an unmet need based on their observations throughout the trip. This hands-on exercise culminated in a fast-paced, start-up-style pitch competition where students presented their innovative solutions to coaches and peers.
A Transformative Experience
Beyond the business challenge, the cultural exchange aspect of the trip played a pivotal role. Students immersed themselves in Mumbai’s rich history and dynamic energy - from visiting iconic landmarks such as Elephanta Caves to engaging with students at IIT Bombay. These experiences deepened their appreciation for the interconnectedness of global markets and the diverse perspectives that fuel innovation.
In Conclusion
Mumbai was more than a lesson in innovation, it was a testament to the power of experiential learning. Our DLAB students strengthened their entrepreneurial skills and cultivated a global mindset. They returned home inspired and better prepared to tackle the challenges of tomorrow’s interconnected world.
