A Week of Entrepreneurial Exploration

Our TE-Week Experience at Lehigh University

In early 2024, a team of 5 DLAB students traveled to the USA to join the Technical Entrepreneurship (TE) week at Lehigh University. The DLAB participants found themselves immersed in a well-structured program designed to deepen their understanding of entrepreneurship and international teamwork.

A Great Start

Our trip started in New York City, setting the stage for a week of immersive learning and practical exploration. Amidst the iconic skyline and bustling streets, our DLAB group seized the opportunity to soak in the cultural and professional vibrancy of the city.
From visits to Times Square and Brooklyn Bridge to breathtaking skyline views, our time in New York provided a fitting prelude to the entrepreneurial endeavours awaiting us at Lehigh University.

The TE Program

The program assembled groups comprising four students each, consisting of one DLAB student and three American counterparts. Each team was assigned a technology licensed either from NASA or Lehigh University patent pool, with the task of developing a commercial business model around the patented technology. These technologies spanned a diverse range, from thermal batteries to innovative tire technology and portable oxygen filters.

Under the guidance of Professor Michael Lehman, the week-long journey unfolded with a series of engaging activities and thought-provoking discussions. Each day brought new challenges and opportunities for growth. From patent analysis to business modelling exercises, the students navigated the intricacies of startup development with a blend of enthusiasm and determination. Expert lectures and visits to local innovation hubs, provided practical insights and in person discussions with local founders.

Pitching New Business Ideas

A highlight of the program was the end-of-week presentation, where teams had the opportunity to showcase their innovative ideas in front of a panel of peers and industry experts. These sessions not only fostered collaboration and critical thinking but also served as a testament to the entrepreneurial spirit of the entire week.

Beyond the academic rigor, TE-Week was also characterized by moments of cultural exchange. Interactions with fellow students from diverse backgrounds provided valuable insights into global perspectives and challenged us to think creatively about the opportunities and challenges of entrepreneurship.

In Conclusion

Lehigh University's TE-Week provided a comprehensive platform for our students to explore the multifaceted world of entrepreneurship. Through hands-on activities, expert guidance, and immersive experiences, all participants emerged with a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities in launching a startup in today's dynamic environment.

For me TE week was thinking innovatively, being creative, and acting ambitious. I loved being part of the program and I am grateful for the tremendous experience.” - Daria

“TE-Week was definitely intense, but an extremely valuable learning experience for me. The exchange with American students revealed that entrepreneurial methods can be implemented quite differently in an international context, thus providing me with a new perspective. However, in addition to the professional exchange, I was able to expand not only my horizons but also my personal network through international contacts and deepen my connections with my DLAB peers.” - Lena

“The TE-Week was a highly intensive yet profoundly educational experience. I found it fascinating to observe the diverse interpretations of teamwork and general problem-solving approaches. I was particularly impressed by the "Just do it" mentality, and I aspire to integrate aspects of it into my own work. Moreover, outside of the formal TE-Week activities, I engaged in extensive discussions with American students about various topics, which provided invaluable insights into their culture and perspectives.” - Steffen
